The Secret to My Survival: Ayi

Some of you dear readers may be wondering how the heck I’ve managed to survive as a my-husband-lives-in-Russia-and-I’m-single-parenting-my-toddler-in-China-while-working-full-time mom.

The secret? In one word: ayi.

Ayi is a Chinese word (the Chinese characters look like this 阿姨) that traditionally means Aunt, but nowadays is what people here in China call their domestic help.

Before Charlotte was born, I had a serious anti-domestic-help complex. Part of it stemmed from the guilt of being born in South Africa, part of it from being weird-ed out by the idea of paying a stranger to clean up after me or take care of my child.

Then Charlotte came along, and I barely had time to brush my teeth, let alone clean the apartment. And then I discovered that my karma-loving, zen’ed out yoga teacher had a cleaning lady, and that was all it took. Days later, we had our first cleaning lady, and it was totally awesome.

Then we moved to Moscow, and then I went back to work. With zero options for good, affordable daycare, we hired a full-time nanny to take care of Charlotte. This too was totally awesome.

But the woman we hired upon arrival in Beijing? Well, she may well be a Chinese domestic super-goddess. She takes wonderful care of Charlotte: she reads to her in Chinese, teaches her how to make play dough dumplings, spends countless hours chasing her around the playground and schlepping her to playdates. But, she also somehow finds time clean my house from top to bottom everyday. When Charlotte gets sick, and insists on being carried around, she cleans the house while holding all 27 lbs of her.

And, she does this:

My sock drawer: all rolled up and colour coordinated!

(she does this to my undies and bras too, but photos of those are not going up on the internet :) )

Sure, she drives me crazy sometimes: she insists on washing my laundry (too personal for me), she speaks in really fast, accented Chinese and assumes I understand, and then there’s the whole anatina issue that we are still fighting about.

But at the end of the day, I come home to a spotless house, and a nurtured and well-loved child. And I can focus on Charlotte, rather than household chores. I can sleep at night instead of scrubbing toilets. There is no dust-bunny guilt.

One word: ayi.

Versatile Blogger Award

Wow, I’ve honoured to have received a VBA- Versatile Blogger Award- from Rachel over at  Peace, Love, and Fabulous Things!

Now, this prestigious award comes with some very heavy responsibilities. According to the rulemakers, recipients of the Versatile Blogger Award must:

1. Thank the person who gave you this award. (Thanks again Rachel!)
2. Include a link to their blog (see above)
3. Select 15 excellent blogs/bloggers that you’ve recently discovered or follow regularly and nominate those 15 bloggers for the Versatile Blogger Award.
4. Finally, tell the person who nominated you 7 things about yourself.

I hereby nominate the following amazing blogs for the Versatile Blogger Award (and apologies for a lack of description, you’ll just have to trust me when I say they are worth checking out):

1. Welcome to the Motherhood

2. I Still Hate Pickles

3. Momma and Max:

4. MODG

5. Walkingon Travels

6. Ramblin’ Ams

7. Becoming Sarah

8. Yolk: A Blog about Eggs and Sperm

9. Hike. Blog. Love

10. Gin and Lemonade

11. Suitcases and Sippy Cups

12. Almost Fearless

13. Ziplight:

14. Abby Has Issues

15. Jen Loves Kev

And now for part 2, here are seven random things about me:

1. I am colour blind. Yes, it is possible for girls to be colour blind. No, I don’t know what colour that object is, so please don’t ask me to guess.

2. I am so very very fortunate to be a fat person trapped in a thin person’s body. I seriously love to eat and if I was not so very blessed I would very likely weigh 300 lbs. I realize as I get older that this special power of mine diminishes with age, and that I may need to start considering exercise (gasp!) in the near future.

3. I love to knit, but rarely have time to finish my projects. My knitting back therefore consists of several single socks, half sweaters, and several swatches of not-sure-what-I-was-trying-to-make.

4. I am dying to go to Bhutan.

5. I so do not get twitter. I’ve tried, really I have. But I must be missing something because I really do not see the point. Maybe I’m just getting old…

6. Since leaving Canada, I have developed a serious online shopping habit. And it’s starting to get expensive. But it is oh so much fun too :)

7. If I told you what I do for a living, I would have to kill you. Kidding. Or, am I?

Thanks again to Rachel for the nomination, and please do check out my nominations!

Top 5 Things I Love About Charlotte Right Now

Charlotte is growing at such an incredible speed that the changes in her on an almost daily basis are oftentimes overwhelming. Seriously, I often come home at the end of the day and have to ask, “Charlotte, did you grow today?”

Before they get lost in the shuffle of all the other crazy changes going on in her body and mind right now, I want to document my current favourite things about my little kiddo:

1. Charlotte now responds to pretty much every question with “Yes I do!” Whether I’m asking her if she wants more milk , if she’s going to play in the park today, or if she’s the cutest little thing there ever was, her answer is inevitably “Yes I do!”

2. Charlotte’s favourite new word is wedgie. She’s pretty much done with diapers during waking hours, and she’s not a big fan of underwear, which means she often goes comando. Which means she is susceptible to the wedgie. But often time she’ll be wearing no pants at all, and she’ll exclaim “wedgie” so I’m not entirely sure she gets what it is, but it is super-cute nonetheless.

3. Charlotte is becoming quite the storyteller. And her favourite thing to tell stories about is falling down. One evening when J. was visiting, the table flap he was leaning on during dinner randomly gave out and he fell forward off his chair onto the floor. Charlotte (and I) thought it was hilarious, and for weeks after whenever we sat at the table for dinner she would point to J.’s seat and tell me: “Baba eat dinner… fall down! boom! Big ouch! No cry!”

4. Charlotte does not yet understand the concept of lying. And I totally take advantage of her inablity to tell nothing but the truth (while I can anyway!). Rather than having a set bedtime or naptime, when I sense she may be getting tired all I have to do is ask, “Charlotte are you sleepy?” and if she is, she will sigh “yeah.” And the whole anatina drama… I discovered it was still going on behind my back by asking Charlotte if her ayi was still giving her anatina, and then asking her where the damn crack crackers are hidden; she totally ratted out her ayi :)

5. My little kiddo has got an incredible sense of compassion! When we were in Moscow, we were coming back from playing in the snow and I was complaining about how cold my hands were when she said “warm up mama’s hands?” and proceeded to rub my hands. After a minute she stopped, looked up at me with her puppy dog eyes full of concern and asked “all better?”
