A Letter to Charlotte at 2 Years Old

Hello little girl. Somehow it has come to pass that the tiny little thing that danced in my belly has become a little person. As you continue to grow, I hope that you will take to heart some of the lessons I have learned in my own life:

1. Always remember that nothing lasts forever. Cherish the good moments because they will pass before you know it. But so will the bad moments.

2. Save money. It doesn’t have to be a lot, but whether in the bank, a piggy bank or a shoebox under your mattress, make sure you have some just-in-case $ set aside. Just in case…

3. Be self-reliant. While you will always have people who love and care for you, they may not always be there when you need them. Learn to take care of yourself.

4. But ask for help when you need it.

5. Don’t be afraid to admit that you don’t understand or that you don’t know. Ask questions.

6. Dance. When you’re happy, when you’re angry, when you’ve had the worst day ever. Put on some good music, turn up the volume, and let it all out. Feel free to sing along at the top of your lungs.

7. When you feel that a situation is unfair or unjust, instead of just complaining about it do something to change it. Be an instigator of change.

8. It’s far better to regret doing something than to regret not doing it. This is especially true for matters of the heart.

9. Love deeply, and often. And when love crushes you, see #1, and #6.

10. Take care of your body; it is essential to your existence. Exercise. Sleep. Moisturize.

11. Know what you’re eating, and, when possible, where it came from. Don’t eat anything that was made by a machine (or, at least, not too often).

12. Be kind to your Dad and I. Remember that we are people too. Never forget that our love for you is unconditional, but please don’t take advantage of it too often.

Happy Birthday my little cutie-patootie!

Love, Mama
